Hey Pri!

Way jazzed about your guy. Keep me posted. As the level-headed Musketeer, though, I've gotta remind you not to pin all your feelings about college on one guy. That's just asking for trouble. Anyway, we'll hang during the Turkey Day long weekend, and you can give me the good dirt. Thanks so much for the help. Tell your Mom, too. I'll let you know if it pans out.

LYKYAMY,

J.

Jenna read the e-mail over once, then clicked send. She shut down the computer, and picked up the phone. In the top drawer of her desk, she found Danny Mariano's card, with his cell number. She sent a quick text, asking him to call her.

And she waited.

While she sat there, someone knocked at her door. Jenna jumped a bit, startled by the sudden invasion of sound into the silence of her room. She crossed the room quickly, glancing back at her phone. When she opened the door, she found Damon Harris standing on the other side.

"Hey," he said, offering a warm smile. "There's an improv comedy thing over at the Campus Center at ten. I was gonna head over. You want to come?"

Jenna glanced back at the phone, then back to Damon. She smiled, but distractedly.

"That'd be nice, Damon, but I can't tonight," she said. "I'm sorry."

He frowned, glanced away. When he looked back up, Jenna thought he looked a little tired.

"Is this 'cause of what Olivia said?" he asked.

Jenna started to respond, but Damon held up both hands.

"Wait," he said. "Let me say my piece. I could tell all that got you a little whacked the other night. Fine. But I'm not here to ask you on a date. We're friends. Maybe there could be more to it, maybe not. But I don't want to not be able to hang with you just 'cause Olivia thinks I shouldn't date a white girl. Next thing she's gonna tell me I can't be friends with a person who's both white and female. Hell, Jenna, Olivia Adams is not my mother. You start worrying about what she thinks and you're playing into her whole race thing."

Jenna stared at him a second, realizing how right he was. Then she laughed, leaned forward, and kissed his cheek.

"I really can't go tonight," she said. "But another night, definitely. Friends, great. And if something else comes out of it down the line . . ." She shrugged.

Damon nodded. Then he shrugged as well. "Besides, you've got your eye on that cop you keep talking about."

Jenna gaped at him, eyes wide. "What? Did Yoshiko . . . oh, never mind. Yeah, I like him, but he thinks I'm a kid. And even . . . well that's got nothing to do with you and me, or reality for that matter."

Damon gave her a sly grin. "Yeah."

Back in her room, her cell phone began to ring.

"There's the call you're waiting for," Damon said. "I'll come by tomorrow. Maybe we can have lunch or something."

"Great," Jenna said.

As Damon walked away, she shut the door and ran to grab her phone.
